Mastic is a natural, aromatic resin. It is extracted from the mastic tree, a shrub that primarily grows in the Mediterranean. However only the variety that is grown on the Greek island of Chios produces mastic “teardrops”. It is a protected species and was recently recognized by the European Medicines Agency as an official medicinal product for digestive problems and the healing of skin wounds.
